Case Study: Bures Primary School, Sudbury

Children from Year 2 (ages 6 and 7) at Bures Primary School in Suffolk enjoyed a Money Day, run by Chloe Brown, Assistant Branch Manager at Ipswich Building Society's Hadleigh branch. Assisted by her Hadleigh branch colleague Sandra Rowson, the day started with Chloe and Sandra acting out (with the help of class teacher Josephine Humphrey) the classic tale of how, before money, people like the fisherman, the farmer and the shoe maker might barter their goods. Coins and selling then helped people exchange what they made for the other things they wanted. This led onto a group game identifying countries and currencies with a World map, flags, notes and coins, before the children played a carousel of games like Money Domino and Money Bear (like bingo) to help them learn the values of different coins. Plenary sessions involving the whole class then got the children thinking and talking about spending and saving. After lunch the children enjoyed making colourful money boxes which helped to reinforce the important messages of the day. Teacher Josephine Humphrey said: "It was absolutely fantastic! The children learnt so much during the day and it was pleasing to see how much they were taking on board. Through stories and role playing they learnt about bartering, and their awareness of different currencies was raised by andling a range of coins and notes from countries around the world." She continued; "We are absolutely delighted with the outcomes and we can't thank Ipswich Building Society enough." The day was rounded off by a visit from Pound the Hound, the Ipswich Building Society mascot.
