I began working for Ipswich Building Society in 1982, as Assistant General Manager. Previously I had worked in the Building Society sector as an Organisations and Methods Manager. I then was appointed to the Board in 1990 and held the position of Sales and Marketing Director before becoming Chief Executive in 2007. During my time at Ipswich Building Society I have seen a great deal of change, particularly during my time as CEO. It was an unfortunate coincidence that following my appointment the banking crisis and subsequent economic down turn took place. There were new and difficult challenges to be faced and I am proud that the Society has weathered the storm and managed to grow in every respect in the last few years. We have grown our asset size, mortgage balances and savings balances. We have also opened two new branches, relocated two to better and bigger premises and opened two new agencies. The Society's members and staff are part of this success and we are pleased that we can provide an alternative to the high street banks.
Although I am not from Suffolk, being born and raised in Derbyshire and a life long supporter of Derby County, I am passionate about the prospects for the region. I currently am Chairman of the Suffolk Institute of Directors and sit on the MP and Business Liaison Board for Suffolk. I also chair the Staying Healthy at Work Employers Champion group for the East of England and am a member of the Building Societies Association Council. I see my role as Chief Executive as one to not only lead Ipswich Building Society, but to be an advocate for mutuality and for the potential of the East of England, an area in which Ipswich Building Society operates.
Being a member of a mutual should provide a different relationship to that of merely being a customer. You are a part of our heritage, future and success.
