On Wednesday 20th May at 12pm, Ipswich Building Society is encouraging businesses in the local area to participate in the first official Ransomes Europark Workplace Challenge Midday Mile, followed by an al fresco wood-fired pizza lunch from Baytree Pizza's pop-up eatery. Alongside Suffolk Sport, the Society is urging all employees to leave their desks to walk, jog, run or cycle one mile with the aim of raising funds for the British Heart Foundation. 38 other events will also be taking place simultaneously across the country as part of Workplace Health Week and is anticipated to be the catalyst for increasing year-round workplace activity.

There is growing evidence that the nation's health is suffering as a result of inactivity. Research has shown that 33% of men and 45% of women are not active enough to be in good health. Physical inactivity is currently responsible for one in six deaths in the UK, and this number is on the rise. With many workers spending more the six hours a day deskbound, the workplace is a key environment to tackle the growing inactivity epidemic and reduce the 160 million working days are lost a year due to sickness.

Lee Mason, Chief Executive of the County Sports Partnership Network, said "Companies and organisations across Suffolk are invited to take part in the 'Workplace Challenge'. The aim of which is to promote sport, physical activity and health improvements across the UK's workplaces. The Midday Mile will be an opportunity for everyone the length and breadth of the country to enjoy the same activity simultaneously. It's an easy way for colleagues to get together and inject a healthy dose of exercise into the working day."

Paul Winter, CEO of Ipswich Building Society, said
"Taking part in the Midday Mile is a great way for our employees to get active at lunchtime, to enjoy spending time away from their desks together and raise money for the British Heart Foundation. By hosting the Ransomes Europark event I hope to see our neighbouring businesses join together to make a huge impact for charitable causes as well as employee well-being."
