Our History

Ipswich Building Society is proud of its history. Founded as a freehold land society in 1849, the Society has a unique collection of deeds, plans, record books and memorabilia covering its 150 year development in the local region.

Most of the material in the archive was rescued from two mysterious trunks which had lain abandoned in their basement for several decades.

When our former Chief Executive John Whayman took over in 1988, he decided to open up the trunks and engaged a local historian to act as the Society's archivist. A treasure trove of old documents, photos and ledgers were discovered, many of which are still being investigated 20 years later.
