BUILDING SOCIETY WINS BUSINESS OF THE YEAR

24 November 2009

Following a difficult year in the financial services sector, Ipswich Building Society has shown their strength as a mutual by winning the top honours in the 2009 Anglian Business Awards, announced at a glittering awards ceremony on the 19 th November.

The Society fought off competition from 15 individual category winners to claim the coveted ‘Business of the Year’ award after it won the ‘Medium-Large Business of the Year’ award.

The success at the awards follows an impressive 2009, which has seen the Society flourish - producing month by month continued growth and record increases in retail savings and mortgage applications.

Speaking of the awards, Paul Winter, chief executive, Ipswich Building Society said: “We are absolutely delighted with our success at the 2009 Anglian Business Awards. We have had a strong year in difficult conditions, and this achievement is a tribute to the hard work of all our staff, and the loyalty of our members.”

He added: “We have an excellent branch network and a contact centre to support customers so we have the infrastructure in place to support our continued growth and success.”

Duncan Brodie, business editor of the East Anglian Daily Times said: “In the hard-pressed financial sector, Ipswich Building Society has bucked the trend and, while there were several strong contenders, it was a clear winner of the overall award.”

Celia Hodson, chief executive of award sponsor Choose Suffolk added; “ “In the hard-pressed financial sector, Ipswich Building Society has bucked the trend and we had no hesitation in selecting them as our overall winners.

“Their organisation’s commitment to customer service and the huge difference they make to the local community in terms of charitable and voluntary activity is also to be commended.”

The Anglian Business Awards 2009, organised by media group Archant, whose titles include the EADT, and sponsored  by Choose Suffolk, received over 100 entrants across 15 categories.
