Eva Mason was last night (24th March) crowned the winner of the inaugural ‘Young Suffolk Composer of the Year’ contest, which was organised by Suffolk Singers, and sponsored by Ipswich Building Society. 17-year old Eva’s winning entry, entitled ‘Count the Clock’ was inspired by Shakespeare’s sonnet 12, and the dramatic composition was performed for the first time by the Suffolk Singers during Ipswich Building Society’s 160 th AGM which took place at Wherstead Park.
Eva, a student at Hartismere High School, was presented with her award, which was sponsored by Ipswich Building Society, by classical musical presenter and award winning broadcaster Humphrey Burton, CBE who had also judged the entries for the competition. As part of her prize, Eva was presented with a £200 cheque.
Joint runners up were 18-year old Tom Rose, from Thomas Mills High School and 18-year old Sam Wilson from Ipswich School. Both were awarded a £30 prize, courtesy of Balaam’s Music Shop in Bury St Edmunds.
Michael Balaam, chairman, Suffolk Singers, said; “The interest for the competition was widespread, and we are absolutely thrilled with the quality of entries. Eva’s composition was beautifully written and we are delighted to award her as the inaugural winner of this competition.”
