Previously our member volunteering events have included time spent assisting Hollesley Suffolk Punch Trust in the stables and worksheds, clearing litter on the beach at Aldeburgh and tree planting at Parkland Woods, Ufford.
Sonia Jackson, Membership & Local Marketing Manager, has been volunteering for over three years.
Sonia regularly visits New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich, a registered charity, to perform the role of usher. Sonia has undergone health and safety and evacuation training to equip her for the role.
"I enjoy most forms of live entertainment, so when I was selecting an organisation to volunteer for, The New Wolsey Theatre was an obvious option. I finally chose to volunteer as an usher, mainly because of the high quality and varied programme of their productions, the work they undertake with schools and colleges and for their admirable efforts to make their theatre fully accessible.
I hadn’t realised beforehand that all of the New Wolsey Theatre’s ushers are volunteers. We all have to undertake Evacuation and Customer Care training before we can start and retake it annually. The volunteers (and the rest of the New Wolsey staff) are a great bunch of people to work with. We obviously enjoy our work otherwise we wouldn’t be there! I volunteer to do far more than the four hours a month Ipswich Building Society kindly allow me time off in lieu for.
We offer a professional and friendly service to our theatre goers. We check tickets and show guests to their seats, we either sit in the performance or sell ice creams and clear the auditorium at the end of the show. I have gained a great deal of satisfaction and enjoyment from volunteering for the New Wolsey Theatre over the past year. I see a wide range of plays, made new friends and feel that I am giving something valuable back to the community by ensuring the Theatre can continue to operate for the benefit of local people."
